Spatial accelerators provide high performance, energy efficiency, and flexibility. Recent design frameworks enable these architectures to be quickly designed and customized to a domain. However, constructing a compiler for this immense design space is challenging, first because accelerators express programs with high-level idioms that are difficult to recognize. Second, it is unpredictable whether certain transformations are beneficial or will lead to infeasible hardware mappings. Our work develops a general spatial-accelerator compiler with two key ideas. First, we propose an approach to recognize and represent useful dataflow idioms, along with a novel idiomatic memory representation. Second, we propose the principle of modular compilation, which combines hardware-aware transformation selection and an iterative approach to handle uncertainty. Our compiler achieves 2.3× speedup, and 98.7× area-normalized speedup over high-end server CPU.more » « less

null (Ed.)As multicore systems continue to grow in scale and on-chip memory capacity, the on-chip network bandwidth and latency become problematic bottlenecks. Because of this, overheads in data transfer, the coherence protocol and replacement policies become increasingly important. Unfortunately, even in well-structured programs, many natural optimizations are difficult to implement because of the reactive and centralized nature of traditional cache hierarchies, where all requests are initiated by the core for short, cache line granularity accesses. For example, long-lasting access patterns could be streamed from shared caches without requests from the core. Indirect memory access can be performed by chaining requests made from within the cache, rather than constantly returning to the core. Our primary insight is that if programs can embed information about long-term memory stream behavior in their ISAs, then these streams can be floated to the appropriate level of the memory hierarchy. This decentralized approach to address generation and cache requests can lead to better cache policies and lower request and data traffic by proactively sending data before the cores even request it. To evaluate the opportunities of stream floating, we enhance a tiled multicore cache hierarchy with stream engines to process stream requests in last-level cache banks. We develop several novel optimizations that are facilitated by stream exposure in the ISA, and subsequent exposure to caches. We evaluate using a cycle-level execution-driven gem5-based simulator, using 10 data-processing workloads from Rodinia and 2 streaming kernels written in OpenMP. We find that stream floating enables 52% and 39% speedup over an inorder and OOO core with state of art prefetcher design respectively, with 64% and 49% energy efficiency advantage.more » « less

null (Ed.)Because of the increasing demand for intensive computation in deep neural networks, researchers have developed both hardware and software mechanisms to reduce the compute and memory burden. A widely adopted approach is to use mixed precision data types. However, it is hard to benefit from mixed precision without hardware specialization because of the overhead of data casting. Recently, hardware vendors offer tensorized instructions specialized for mixed-precision tensor operations, such as Intel VNNI, Nvidia Tensor Core, and ARM DOT. These instructions involve a new computing idiom, which reduces multiple low precision elements into one high precision element. The lack of compilation techniques for this emerging idiom makes it hard to utilize these instructions. In practice, one approach is to use vendor-provided libraries for computationally-intensive kernels, but this is inflexible and prevents further optimizations. Another approach is to manually write hardware intrinsics, which is error-prone and difficult for programmers. Some prior works tried to address this problem by creating compilers for each instruction. This requires excessive efforts when it comes to many tensorized instructions. In this work, we develop a compiler framework, UNIT, to unify the compilation for tensorized instructions. The key to this approach is a unified semantics abstraction which makes the integration of new instructions easy, and the reuse of the analysis and transformations possible. Tensorized instructions from different platforms can be compiled via UNIT with moderate effort for favorable performance. Given a tensorized instruction and a tensor operation, UNIT automatically detects the applicability of the instruction, transforms the loop organization of the operation, and rewrites the loop body to take advantage of the tensorized instruction. According to our evaluation, UNIT is able to target various mainstream hardware platforms. The generated end-to-end inference model achieves 1.3 x speedup over Intel oneDNN on an x86 CPU, 1.75x speedup over Nvidia cuDNN on an Nvidia GPU, and 1.13x speedup over a carefully tuned TVM solution for ARM DOT on an ARM CPU.more » « less

Abstract—Dense linear algebra kernels are critical for wireless, and the oncoming proliferation of 5G only amplifies their importance. Due to the inductive nature of many such algorithms, parallelism is difficult to exploit: parallel regions have fine grain producer/consumer interaction with iteratively changing dependence distance, reuse rate, and memory access patterns. This causes a high overhead both for multi-threading due to fine-grain synchronization, and for vectorization due to the nonrectangular iteration domains. CPUs, DSPs, and GPUs perform order-of-magnitude below peak. Our insight is that if the nature of inductive dependences and memory accesses were explicit in the hardware/software interface, then a spatial architecture could efficiently execute parallel code regions. To this end, we first extend the traditional dataflow model with first class primitives for inductive dependences and memory access patterns (streams). Second, we develop a hybrid spatial architecture combining systolic and dataflow execution to attain high utilization at low energy and area cost. Finally, we create a scalable design through a novel vector-stream control model which amortizes control overhead both in time and spatially across architecture lanes. We evaluate our design, REVEL, with a full stack (compiler, ISA, simulator, RTL). Across a suite of linear algebra kernels, REVEL outperforms equally-provisioned DSPs by 4.6×—37×. Compared to state-of-the-art spatial architectures, REVEL is mean 3.4× faster. Compared to a set of ASICs, REVEL is only 2× the power and half the area.more » « less

With slowing technology scaling, specialized accelerators are increasingly attractive solutions to continue expected generational scaling of performance. However, in order to accelerate more advanced algorithms or those from challenging domains, supporting \emph{data-dependence} becomes necessary. This manifests as either data-dependent control (eg. join two sparse lists), or data-dependent memory accesses (eg. hash-table access). These forms of data-dependence inherently couple compute with memory, and also preclude efficient vectorization -- defeating the traditional mechanisms of programmable accelerators (eg. GPUs). Our goal is to develop an accelerator which is broadly applicable across algorithms with and without data-dependence. To this end, we first identify forms of data-dependence which are both common and possible to exploit with specialized hardware: specifically stream-join and alias-free indirection. Then, we create an accelerator with an interface to support these, called the Sparse Processing Unit (SPU). SPU supports alias-free indirection with a compute-enabled scratchpad and aggressive stream reordering and stream-join with a novel dataflow control model for a reconfigurable systolic compute-fabric. Finally, we add robustness across datatypes by adding decomposability across the compute and memory pipelines. SPU achieves 16.5$$\times$$, 10.3x, and 14.2x over a 24-core SKL CPU on ML, database, and graph algorithms respectively. SPU achieves similar performance to domain-specific accelerators. For ML, SPU achieves 1.8-7x speedup against a similarly provisioned GPGPU, with much less area and power.more » « less
